Mike Jenkins Personal Background

In addition to Mike's four decades in the insurance industry Mike has many interests outside work and is very active in the Chattanooga community.
Mike was born and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky where he began playing golf at just two years of age. A veteran of the game at age 6, he entered his first competition, The Jaycee Junior, a one day 18-hole event, and has been playing competitive golf ever since.
At the age of 12 Mike won the Jaycee Junior with a 2-over par 72. The tournament was for juniors age 17 and under.
Finishing 2nd and 3rd were his 17-year-old twin brothers Doug and Don. As a result Mike was featured in the August, 1964 edition of Sports Illustrated in “Faces in the Crowd,” his true 15 minutes of fame.
Mike went on to play high school golf at Bowling Green High School, graduating as one of four valedictorians in 1969. He then played college golf at Western Kentucky University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in math and physics.
Immediately upon graduating from WKU Mike moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he resides with his wife, Sandee. Their two adult sons, Chris and Dana live nearby.
Mike is still playing competitive golf today. Even though his playing career won’t be recorded in any record books his love and compassion for the game, and his desire to share the game with others is surpassed by no one.
Mike has served as president and/or treasurer of Chattanooga District Golf Association for the past 20+ years. He also serves on the Tennessee Golf Association board of directors and currently serves as president of the board of directors for The First Tee of Chattanooga.
In 1993 Mike founded the Chattanooga TPC, a season-ending golf tournament in Chattanooga for the top amateurs in the city, based on their play in various events throughout the year. Mike has served as tournament chairman since the tournament’s inception.
In 1999 Mike and good friend Richard Keene created www.ifyoulikegolf.com for the purpose of promoting amateur golf in Chattanooga. www.ifyoulikegolf covers all local amateur golf tournaments in the Chattanooga area and maintains a ranking of the top Chattanooga area players.
Mike also began hosting “The First Tee Golf Hour” in 2011 on WGOW (102.3 FM), along with SportTalk’s Gary Haskew (Dr. B) and Scott McMahen (Quake), every Thursday during golf season, 6 – 7 PM. Guests Mike has interviewed on the weekly show during its first two seasons have included Annika Sorenstam, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Joe Louis Barrows, Jr., Vince Gill, Doug Sanders, Billy Casper, and Tom Watson.
On February 28, 2011 Mike was inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame for his many years of service to the Chattanooga golf community.
Mike carries this same passion and enthusiam into his business. He enjoys helping people "plan for the unplanned events in our lives."
